This program is not funded by the government. It is independently managed by 221B Baker St. LLC and sponsored by the nonprofit ChicagoDirectGrant.org, which is 100% funded by private donations — not taxpayer money. That means we don’t have free resources or city funding behind us. Every application requires real-time verification, fraud checks, and manual review — all of which cost money to do responsibly.
The $5.99 verification charge allows us:
